Oxford, Mississippi, is home to The Grove, the spiritual home of American tailgating. Athens, Georgia, houses 80 bars in a single square mile and quadruples in population on game day.
And yet, neither outranked Madison as America’s best football town, according to Sports Illustrated. Columnist Joan Niesen cited the city’s “picturesque” lakes, the Terrace (naturally) and the delightful ribbon of bars on State. She also labeled UW-Madison “the most delightful spot in the Midwest.”
