National Hispanic Heritage Month, celebrated annually from Sept. 15-Oct. 15, begins mid-month to coincide with Independence Day in five Central American countries: Costa Rica, Nicaragua, El Salvador, Honduras and Guatemala; Mexico’s falls on the 16th and Chile’s on the 18th. Mark your calendar to celebrate Milwaukee’s Hispanic Heritage in style at the UMOS Mexican Independence Day Festival on Saturday, Sept. 16 at 2701 S. Chase Ave.

This annual celebration – featuring live music, carnival rides, food vendors and lucha libres (Mexican-style wrestling at its best) – is guaranteed free fun for the whole family. The parade kicks off at 10 a.m. followed by the festival from 12-8 p.m.

The event is sponsored by UMOS, a nonprofit advocacy organization that – since 1965 – has been providing programs and services to improve the lives of folks from all ethnic, racial and linguistic backgrounds.
