The demand for new home construction in Wisconsin remains high, but homebuilders are struggling to find skilled workers. Wisconsin Builders Association executive director Brad Boycks said record-low unemployment is making it difficult to hire new workers.
“When the housing economy took a dip, many tradespeople went to other fields,” Boycks said. Additionally, fewer young people are pursuing skilled trades.
To rebuild interest in trades, 21 WBA local associations sponsor an annual “Student Build” home. The Wisconsin Builders Foundation also is active in Pathways Wisconsin, a pilot program aligning education and training with the needs of the local job market.
