Lorine Niedecker (1903-1970) was in high school when her English teacher inspired the Fort Atkinson student’s interest in poetry. She attended Beloit College for two years (where she was an active member of the poetry club) before withdrawing to care for her ailing mother.
Blackhawk Island, the place of her birth, was the subject of Niedecker’s early poems — as were the sights and sounds of her rustic environment on the banks of the Rock River.
“The Brontës had their moors; I have my marshes,” the Wisconsin Poet of Place echoed in her poem, “My Life By Water” among myriad others.
