The Milwaukee Bucks are one of 17 NBA teams tipping off a new eSports league, which launches in May. This month, Bucks Gaming will draft players for Milwaukee’s team — but you won’t see virtual Giannis Antetokounmpo, as gamers will compete in five-on-five matchups of NBA 2K18 as their own avatars. Draftees will relocate to Milwaukee, play home games and travel for road matchups. They’ll receive salaries, housing and benefits.
The Bucks are Wisconsin’s first sports organization to participate in eSports. In 2017, the fast-growing market earned $696 million in revenue and could surpass $1 billion by 2020.
