Door County Half Marathon merges running, tourism

Gearing up for its eleventh iteration in May, the Door County Half Marathon and Nicolet Bay 5K have become an unofficial welcome to another season of tourism on the tip of Wisconsin’s thumb.

The race, weaving up bluffs and through the forests of Peninsula State Park in Fish Creek, attracts about 2,500 runners annually. In 2016, 92 percent of runners came from outside Door County, giving the local economy a chance to hit the ground running during its “shoulder season” as winter turns to spring. Runners and families spent about $370,311 on lodging alone during 2016’s race weekend.
