It’s not often that we immortalize a fictional character in bronze, but if anyone deserved a statue, it’s Arthur Fonzarelli.
Originally just a side character on Milwaukee-based “Happy Days,” the Fonz rapidly surpassed the leads in popularity and commanded a greater role. Credit goes to Henry Winkler, who improvised famous moments such as the Fonz checking himself out in the mirror.
Thirty-five years after “Happy Days,” the “Fonz” stands proud on Milwaukee’s RiverWalk, just south of Wells Street. Funded by Visit Milwaukee and designed by Gerald P. Sawyer, the “Bronze Fonz” confidently stands with his trademark thumbs up.
