The University of Wisconsin-Madison has long printed a weekly publication called The Union, and it was this name that would inspire the satirical newspaper, The Onion.
Founded by two UW-Madison students in 1988, The Onion was a hallmark of State Street for decades. Printed weekly, the paper gained popularity in Madison and soon spread to other campuses around the Midwest. After creating a website to publish its stories online in 1996, The Onion’s content took off around the country.
Eventually moving to the Chelsea neighborhood in Manhattan and then to Chicago, the newspaper now publishes stories exclusively online.
