In a press conference on Feb. 18, Governor Evers suggested that it’s time for Wisconsin to both decriminalize possession and legalize medicinal use of marijuana.

A cancer survivor himself, Evers said “I know the side effects of a major illness can make everyday tasks a challenge. People shouldn’t be treated as criminals for accessing a desperately needed medication that can alleviate their suffering.”

The proposal is also intended to reduce the incarceration rate for black men, of which Wisconsin currently has the highest in the country. Drug-related crimes account for as many as 75-85 percent of all inmates.
