It all started when Joseph Gayetty invented “Medicated Paper For the Water-Closet” in 1857. The great expense of production kept it a luxury for the rich.
When indoor plumbing became mainstream in the 1900s, Northern Paper Mills of Green Bay, Wisconsin created the first flushable sanitary tissue, coined the “Northern Tissue.”
Success was imminent. Northern’s production even helped get the town through the worst parts of the Great Depression.
