Wisconsin’s first pro baseball champion

by Jan Schroder

Can you name Wisconsin’s first baseball team to win a major professional league title?

The Racine Belles didn’t just win the championship in 1992’s “A League Of Their Own,” they won it in real life, too. Twice.

The movie is most closely associated with the 1946 season, when the Belles beat the Rockford Peaches 4-2 in the championship series. But Racine also won it all in 1943, sweeping all three games against the Kenosha Comets in an all-Wisconsin final.

The Braves won the World Series once in 1957. The Brewers have reached the World Series once but still haven’t won it yet.
