Milwaukee designer champions sustainable fashion

Milwaukee native Vanessa Andrew has been making handmade clothing from recycled materials under the name Madam Chino since 2003. Her hip garments are made-to-order from recycled T-shirts.

“It’s an empowering feeling to create something from nothing.”

Along with her online shop, Andrew sells her one-of-a-kind fashion designs and housewares at an eco-chic boutique of the same name on North Palmer Street in Brewers Hill. Madam Chino provides alterations, repairs and community sewing classes to extend the life of clothing.

“It’s a great way to keep clothing out of the waste stream,” said Andrew.
