Communicating our non-negotiables, across the board

by Jan Schroder

A recent question from my soon-to-be 17-year-old revealed a hole in what I had believed were water-tight (as well as well-articulated) household expectations.

“What’s your position on boy-girl sleepovers?” she asked nonchalantly as we stuffed braised pork into corn tortillas for dinner.

After lifting my jaw off the counter, I set to work explaining my stance (that’s a hard no for this mama, in the foreseeable – and distant – future) and reevaluating my role:

No matter where we are, from the board room during a presentation to the kitchen on taco Tuesday, communicating non-negotiables to team members counts – especially our kids.
