Firefighters across Wisconsin step in to cover Madison’s Station 1

The Madison Fire Department suffered a devastating loss in June. During the half-Ironman race on June 9, 38-year-old firefighter Todd Mahoney was found unresponsive.

Mahoney passed away, survived by his wife and three children. His memorial was scheduled for June 16, but the on-duty emergency responders of Station 1 could not attend.

That’s when firefighters from 19 fire stations across Wisconsin stepped in. “The least we can do is provide some coverage,” Fond du Lac Fire Chief Peter O’Leary said.

“That’s the brotherhood; that’s exactly what we sign on for,” said Appleton fire Lt. Jake Kirchner.
