Devil’s Lake in Sauk County is the center of three Wisconsin legends, including the story of Thunder Bird.

A young Native American named Blue Feather was sent to the holy land of Devil’s Lake, where he met the Water Spirit and her rival, Thunder Bird. Blue Feather shot Thunder Bird with a flaming arrow, after which the Water Spirit pulled the wounded Thunder Bird into Devil’s Lake. The bluffs shook with thunder, and lightning struck.

It’s said that when thunder shakes the bluffs and lightning strikes, the Water Spirit and Thunder Bird are battling at the bottom of Devil’s Lake.
