Snowbirds Larry and Linda Konya owned their downtown Milwaukee condo for five years when they opted to sell. The couple, who winter in Florida, still spend summers in Milwaukee, but as renters. In June, they’ll return to the Moderne with their two cocker spaniels.
“Renting offers us more flexibility,” said Larry Konya.
The Konyas aren’t alone. Between 2006 and 2016, renters in their 60s increased 84 percent, according to analysis of Census Bureau data by the Joint Center for Housing Studies of Harvard University.
“Baby boomers today are very mobile. They want to be unshackled,” says Shorewest agent Jim Schleif.
