Milwaukee transforms environmental threats into innovations

“Climate change poses real threats to our shared water resources,” said BaseTern inventor Erick Shambarger. “We can view these threats as opportunities to find local solutions that protect the environment while creating jobs.”

Shambarger took intersecting challenges – the foreclosure crisis and flooding due to climate change – and invented a pilot program converting basements slated for demolition into underground stormwater cisterns.

Other inventions from Milwaukee innovators focusing on water issues:

Storm GUARDen, an innovative garden system created by Carrie Bristoll-Groll of Stormwater Solutions Engineering.

• A water contamination sensor, developed at the Global Water Center by Marcia Silva and Dave Rice.
