July: Wisconsin’s growing silent sports scene

cross country skiing

In July, The Wisconsin 100 team shared how silent sports like biking, fishing and hiking represent a big slice of the state’s tourism industry, making a major economic impact on the northern Wisconsin region.

Hayward is one of several Wisconsin cities embracing the silent sports movement. The sleepy Northwoods community hosts two of the world’s top racing events – the American Birkebeiner cross-country ski race and the Chequamegon Fat Tire bicycle race.

In February, an estimated 13,500 skiers and 30,000 spectators will take over Hayward for the 45th Slumberland American Birkebeiner, North America’s largest cross-country ski marathon.
