Floating to the top: Wisconsin’s cranberry reign

by Jan Schroder

Wisconsin produces more cranberries than any other state – nearly 60% of the U.S. supply. While it’s often overshadowed by the state’s cheese fame, cranberries are actually Wisconsin’s top fruit crop by value.

Grown in sunken beds called bogs, the berries are harvested in the fall when fields are flooded, creating those iconic, vibrant red scenes. Most of the state’s cranberry farms are in central Wisconsin, near towns like Warrens, which even hosts an annual Cranberry Festival.

Next time you enjoy cranberry sauce or juice, there’s a good chance those tart little berries were born and bobbed here in Wisconsin!
