Northland College's Burke Center

What: Burke Center for Freshwater Innovation

Where: Northland College

Why: Situated on the southern shore of Lake Superior, Northland College in Ashland is known for educating the next generation of environmental leaders.

In 2015, Northland won a $10 million endowment to create the Burke Center for Freshwater Innovation. The center, which has a location on campus and another at Forest Lodge, a historic retreat on Lake Namakagon, combines scientific research with communications and public policy. The long-term vision for the center is to shape policy and inspire action toward the protection and restoration of freshwater resources throughout the world.
