In interviews with 145 Wisconsin educators and employers, UW-Madison assistant professor Matthew Hora learned firsthand about the need for workers with real-world competencies that aren’t evident on a diploma, resume or job application.
These so-called soft skills, or “habits of mind” as Hora says, formed the basis of his 2016 book, “Beyond the Skills Gap: Preparing College Students for Life and Work.” He describes how preparing college students with a broader range of 21st-century skills through new approaches to teaching and learning yield benefits in and out of the workplace.
