In the late 1800s, the college town of Whitewater in southern Wisconsin was known as the Second Salem.
“There’s a legend that there was actually a witch trial in Whitewater and people believed there were many witches, like Mary Worth. She told the town she wanted to be buried in the cemetery and, if denied, she’d curse the town,” says Stephanie Mepham of Second Salem Paranormal Investigation Team, a student-organized group at UW-Whitewater.
“Bloody Mary” is still a much-talked about figure in the town; her crypt is a perennial stop on the Whitewater Spirit Tour each October.
